About this site

The main purpose of this site is to provide some reference materials on Cantonese pronunciations based on the Jyutping romanisation system. I designed this site with adult Cantonese-learners in mind. There are lists of Cantonese pronunciation components (initials, finals and tones). I will also put in Chinese characters here and there so that your Cantonese-speaking friends can also help you without having to know the Jyutping pronunciation system themselves. Occasionally I will also share some other useful or fun Cantonese resources (recommendations are welcome). I copied most of the Jyutping materials from the internet, and sometimes reference a Cantonese textbook called “Cantonese for Everyone (Jyutping version)”

About choosing Jyutping

Unlike with Putonghua (Mandarin Chinese) where everyone uses the same Pinyin romanisation system, there are numerous Cantonese romanisation systems out there, and to be honest there doesn’t seem to be a consensus emerging any time soon on which romanisation system will prevail as the prominent one for Cantonese learners.

This site uses the Jyutping romanisation simply because I happen to type Chinese with Jyutping on my computer and my Android smartphone. It’s basically the only Cantonese romanisation system I know.
